The Breakdown: UFC 127

Posted by Jose Fernandez on 28th February 2011

Pictured: Fitch and Penn fight to a draw.

Sandwiched in between a couple of blockbuster cards, UFC 127 turned out to be a rather entertaining night of fights. One of the greatest mixed martial artists, BJ Penn took on arguably the greatest welterweight not named George St. Pierre. Michael Bisping and Rivera co-headline the card in what became one of the greatest, or worst, feuds since Shamrock vs. Ortiz. Add Lytle taking on new comer, yet veteran with 62 fights on his resume, Brian Ebersole and we got a card worth taking a look at. Read the rest of this entry »

Jon Fitch at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia drew with MMA’s great BJ Penn last night. A fight in which I think he won. But more importantly, it’s a fight in which he does not get his due respect.

UFC 127: Total-MMA Daily Staff Predicts Penn vs. Fitch

Posted by Total-MMA Staff on 26th February 2011

Penn & Fitch

Pictured: BJ Penn (left) and Jon Fitch face off at UFC 127 weigh-ins yesterday.

Tonight in Australia, ZUFFA presents a fairly good show with an interesting main event — pitting MMA’s most decorated lightweight in BJ Penn continuing his run at welter, against top welter contender Jon Fitch. The Total-MMA Staff is proud to offer you our take on it. Yep, the whole staff basically came out to play for this one. Who will get bragging rights this time?

As always, our predictions are for entertainment purposes only so don’t blame us if you lose your fortune and end up in a tent in the Outback. Go Waltzing Matilda with me. Or something.

Starting off is the guy who correctly predicted Fedor’s upset at the hands of “Bigfoot” Silva a few weeks ago, Jose Fernandez:

Fight Of The Week

Posted by Robert Visnick on 25th February 2011

Penn & Fitch

There is not a lot of hype surrounding Saturday’s UFC 128 card, but we all know the past some of the less hyped cards deliver the best fights.

With that in mind, the fight of the week is an obvious pick — BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch.

The Breakdown: UFC 126

Posted by Jose Fernandez on 8th February 2011

Anderson Silva

Pictured: Anderson Silva celebrates another victory.

This past Saturday’s UFC 126 came stacked from top to bottom: a championship fight, former champions, and fast rising contenders. The main event between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort was regarded as the most significant middleweight bout in the history of the company. Former champions Forrest Griffin and Rich Franklin battled to prove naysayers wrong about where they stood in the stacked light heavyweight division. Finally we were promised a showdown between the light heavyweight division’s top two prospects in Jon Jones and Ryan Bader. Would Silva vs. Belfort be the most dynamic, incredible fight we’ve ever seen or would it turn into the worst staring contest in the history of the sport? Is Rich Franklin poised for one more title run? Or at age 36, are his best days behind him? Would Bader be the guy to make Jones look human?

UFC 123 Preview

Posted by Jacob Lawton on 18th November 2010

UFC 123 Poster

We here at Total MMA do our best to provide you all with our predictions for every major event, and this weekend’s UFC, emanating from the Palace of Auburn Hills Arena in Michigan, is no exception. Pity it’s an average card only remarkable due to a particularly strong headliner, but there is some good stuff going on on the main card. Tommy was at pains to point out to me the prescence of George ‘Georgie’ Sotiropolous on the undercard, taking on Joe Lauzon in a bout BJJ purists will certainly delight in, and in Gerald Harris and Phil Davis we have a couple of American A-List emerging talents getting a chance to air the skills live to the country on PPV for the first time. Along with the aforementioned clash between former Light Heavyweight Champions Machida and Rampage up top, there’s plenty to recommend this card to any looking for a fix of MMA to put the trainwreck that was UFC 122 out of their minds.

For those of you who will not be joining the paying masses for the main card, Spike TV will carry two prelim fights the hour before the PPV - Matt Brown will face Brian Foster at 170lbs and Aaron Simpson will cross swords with Mark Munoz at 185lbs. Neither fight is particularly attractive on paper, but it’s free MMA, and with our glorious sport, even the dullest match on paper can turn out to be a barnstormer, so we all might as well check it out. Set the DVR, at least.

Predictions are by David Batemen (DB) and myself (JL). A reminder that our picks are for entertainment purposes only. Don’t come crying to us when you’re living in the homeless shelter because you foolishly respected our choices. Read the rest of this entry »

UFC 122 Preview: What Fight Fans Should Be Watching Tonight

Posted by Tommy Hackett on 13th November 2010

Marquardt & Okami

Pictured: Two of the UFC Middleweight elite, Nate Marquardt and Jushin Okami, who will square off at UFC 122 tonight in Germany.

Loyal Total-MMA readers will recall how I’ve chosen to highlight boxing events here, especially when a great bout is on the same night as a subpar MMA show. One would think tonight would seem such a night — as UFC lines up a show in Germany without a single title match, against a glamorous night of boxing in Texas, as Manny Pacquiao ends his quest for another title in another weight division. One would think this is such night, indeed…

One couldn’t be more wrong. To hell with the Marquis of Queensbury.

Faced with the choice of these two events, any real fight fan will be watching a tape-delayed UFC 122.

Why? Simply put, any real fight fan has to look him or herself in the mirror tomorrow morning. Any real fight fan knows Antonio Margarito should be in jail and not licensed to fight since being caught red-handed with plaster in his handwraps a year ago. Any fan knows that this fight is bogus: a joke of a title in a non-existent weight division. Whether or not Margarito suddenly becomes a decent fighter tonight (he’s looked totally inept since he was caught cheating and put under greater scrutiny), whether or not Pacquiao comes in distracted as rumors state and the bout becomes competitive (of course, those rumore have been swirling about for the last seven years, and so far proven untrue at every turn), whether or not this UFC is subpar (let’s be honest, it is), it just doesn’t stand any ethical scrutiny to take part in Pacquiao/Margarito tonight.

So, here goes. UFC 122 is being televised on Spike TV on tape delay from Germany tonight, and we’re watching. A bout between two possible #1 contenders for Anderson Silva’s middleweight belt is the highlight, along with what should be an entertaining scrap between sluggers Jorge Rivera and Alessio Sakara, and some interesting talent from Europe besides.

The Total-MMA UFC 121 Breakdown

Posted by Tommy Hackett on 23rd October 2010

Lesnar and Velasquez face off

Pictured: UFC Heavweight Champion Brock Lesnar (left) and challenger Cain Velasquez face off at the UFC 121 weigh-ins yesterday.

So… at 7 pm PST tonight from the Honda Center in the greater area of La Ciudad De Nuestra Señora, Reina de los Angeles, aka L.A. — fight fans are treated to UFC 121: Lesnar vs Velasquez, perhaps the UFC’s last big show of 2010. What hasn’t been said about this show? Who isn’t excited for this main, featuring a champion who finally stands alone on top of the division against its biggest blue chip prospect? Who isn’t sick of the Mexico vs US theme that the UFC hype machine is spitting out? Who knew Cain’s native California seceded anyway? I was born there — I guess I need a Brown Pride tat so I can piss off all the internets. Oh well. Maybe I’ve lost touch of my roots — but tonight, ich bin ein Mexicaner.

As always, our predictions are for entertainment purposes only, along with my references to Cain’s heritage. You want my opinion? The guy has every right to be proud of it. Sure, a “White Pride” tat wouldn’t go over so well but hey, life isn’t fair. Quit whining and go for yours. Cain’s and his fam are living proof that hard work pays off. So shaddap.
