REVIEWED: Total MMA by Jonathan Snowden

Posted by Dave Walsh on 21st December 2008

As the sport of Mixed Martial Arts grows, as does the public’s interest with the fighters, the personalities and the history of the sport. Of course, to meet that demand that means that publishers are going to start to demand books on the subject are available. With that being said, Total MMA: Inside Ultimate Fighting by Jonathan Snowden sets itself away from the rest of the pack by doing what nobody else has done; present a thorough history of Mixed Martial Arts dating back to the inception of Judo and everything else leading up to modern Mixed Martial Arts. Not only is it the information that sets Total MMA apart, but the narrative style and passion the writer has for the sport of MMA.

Who Will Watch The Watchmen?

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 21st October 2008

The fallout from EXC’s demise has struck an un-nerving tone for many:

As a writer, if you have information that not only can advance a story in the media with new details but also impact a current, on-going investigation, then start talking. By admitting this news item in the manner in which it was stated, it comes off as if you’re saying, “Well, if Elite XC hadn’t closed its doors, I might have not said anything about this.”

This is not the first time in the week that Zach Arnold has said something to this extent. Included along in his editorial was this post by Fightlinker, citing similar issues with the fashion in which MMA’s best journalists are conducting business. Alternately, he makes sure to give high fives to opinion/link based websites who made sure to “put the heat on” for an investigation that ultimately lead to EXC’s deal with Showtime Networks collapsing. Its an interesting dichotomy: Sources and Journalists bad, those republishing aspects of their stories for opinions good.

Rampage and Forrest Have a Classic

Posted by Tommy Hackett on 6th July 2008

Griffin throws a high kick against Quenton Jackson

Following the final bell of last night’s UFC light heavyweight championship title bout, Forrest Griffin could be heard thanking the cornermen who helped him reach this moment:

“Thank you guys so f—ing much… Seriously, I don’t say it enough.”

Griffen had yet to be declared victorious in the bout, but had already proven more than capable to go blow for blow with the world’s very best. His transition from the brawler of three years ago to today’s tactical world class Mixed Martial Artist is complete, with more than a little help from his friends. It was a Forrest Griffin I never expected to see.

The only response from his cornermen came (appropriately enough) from UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture, who quietly replied, “it was an honor.”

For the rest of us, it was a moment to remember — one of many in last night’s classic UFC title fight and my “fight of the year” so far.

Total MMA Daily: TUF Finale Edition

Posted by Jonathan Snowden on 20th June 2008

Your roundtable:
DW: Dave Walsh
AC: Alan Conceicao
LC: Lee Casebolt
JS: Jonathan Snowden

TUF Final: CB vs. Amir

LC: Picking the finale is (almost) always hard. A case like this, where you’ve got two guys with very little previous experience, is even harder. Anybody who watched the show has seem Amir’s entire career, and now he’s had, what, six weeks to change up his game. CB’s case isn’t quite as dramatic, but isn’t far off. I’d have to go with Amir, though. He won the first fight, he trains at a better camp, and he appears (disclaimer about the dangers of television editing HERE) to be way less cocky. Amir by decision.

AC: If the finale itself is as good as their first fight, all bets are off. I’m thinking CB will look back at this performance on the show and work his cardio and then wrestle down Amir repeatedly. Amir’s gonna give as good as he gets for awhile. What does bother me is the question of where Amir goes from here, regardless of whether he wins or loses. He beat a lot of very solid pros on the show with no actual pro MMA experience. A slight bump up in competition puts him in really deep water very fast.

DW: I only know of what I’ve read in Kendall’s posts, so I must say go Amir. That is all.

JS: There is no reason that CB shouldn’t win this fight. When you take two relatively inexperienced fighters and put them in together, the rule of thumb is always bet on the wrestler. So I’m betting on the wrestler. But my heart will be with Amir.
