Fight of the Week: Roger Gracie vs Trevor Prangley

Roger Gracie (right) celebrates his win over Trevor Prangley at Strikeforce

It was a tough week to select one specific fight that stood head and shoulders above the rest. Last Saturday’s UFC 126 and Strikeforce ‘Diaz vs Cyborg’ the weekend prior brought us two action packed fight cards that any mixed martial arts fan can appreciate. There was a little bit of everything, from wars of attrition to incredible technical displays, submission battles to brutal knockouts, and champions showing exactly why they are champions. The fight that claims the top spot is actually one of the lesser talked about fights on both cards. Nonetheless, it is a fight that many diehards were heavily anticipating.

While still early in his MMA career, Roger Gracie shows the promise to be one of the greatest of all time. With only four fights in nearly five years, Gracie claims he is finally ready to focus on MMA. Following in the footsteps of his family before him, the Brazilian grappler comes to the fight game with one objective in mind: to show that his family’s art is the best in the world. Like Rickson and Royce in the 90s, Roger is easily dismantling the competition and barely breaking a sweat while doing it. All four of his fights have come to conclusion in under two rounds, and all via submission. His opponents, who have been increasing in difficulty each time out, appear to be completely overwhelmed by the grappling ability of the 6′5″ light heavyweight. In a time where rounded fighters are the norm and where one dimensional athletes are given little hope of becoming top contenders, Gracie is slowly proving that his jiu-jitsu is not the run of the mill jiu-jitsu. It’s the real deal.
