Pictured: Phil Davis, who is among the prospects to challenge new light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones in the future. Davis fights Antônio Rogério Nogueira tonight at UFC Fight Night in Seattle.
Jon Jones looked amazing last Saturday night. There was a feeling of destiny in the air as the young New Yorker made his way to the Octagon, from a pretty good (considering this was a New Jersey crowd) reaction from the UFC faithful. Then he stepped into the cage and beat seven bells out of a man considered by many to be among the top five fighters on the planet. Even the most hardcore Jones-o-phile couldn’t have foreseen just how dominant their favourite would be as he stepped dominated Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in every aspect of the game, out working him standing and against the cage and destroying him with some young Tito Ortiz-esque ground and pound from inside the guard. When the fight finally finished, there was no doubt who the victor was, and no doubt that he deserves his spot in the sun atop the 205 lbs rankings. But for how long?
The Light Heavyweight weight class has always been a competitive one, and no sooner had Jon Jones hand been raised than the sharks, scenting blood, began to gather:

Pictured: Brock Lesnar — who stands alone at the top among MMA’s heavyweights.
It’s been a while since the rankings were updated — so there are a lot of changes, and a lot to cover.
Lesnar successfully came back from his illness and defended his belt against a guy that a lot of people thought would knock Lesnar out. That coupled with the fall of “The Last Emperor” means we have a new king of the heavyweight division.
Penn lost a tough fight to Frankie Edgar and then lost the rematch in an even more decisive fashion so lightweight has a new number one for the first time in years.
Jake Shields makes his return to welterweight and even though he hasn’t fought there in a while, he is obviously deserving of a top spot. This also changes the look of the middleweight rankings as well. We also saw one of the up and coming talents take his first loss when Feijao took out Strikeforce LHW champion King Mo while another young talent Jon Jones is continuing his tear through the LHW division.
So there are some big changes and the rankings will be shaken up even more later this year as there are a lot more pivotal matchups scheduled to take place. With an upset in his next fight with Frank Mir, Mirko Cro Cop could actually make an appearance in the top ten and push Nogueira out. We will see.

Today’s bantamweight division is like a time warp ten years into the past. It’s a fantastic situation of utter chaos, much like the major weight classes were at the turn of the century, which, in my humble opinion, makes for riveting viewing. It’s top dog has already changed twice over the past twelve months, and you wouldn’t bet against it happening again tonight as champ Dominick Cruz (15-1) and Urijah Faber protoge Joseph Benavidez (12-1) go at it for the WEC strap in a rematch of a fight that took place just last year. It was the fight that secured Cruz his title shot, his perfect footwork and dizzying head movement taking him to an unanimous decision over a frustrated Benavidez, who could not work his grappling game at all as he liked. That particular duel is intriguing, but so is the top of the bantamweight division in general. Let’s try and unravel the twisted mass of the top five or so bantamweight fighters currently fighting in the WEC…

When Dana White describes an event as “the best night of his career”, you know it must be a good one.
UFC 116 will not be forgotten by any MMA fan in a hurry. That tends to happen when two FOTN bonuses are awarded in the same night (to Akiyama v Chris Leben and Krzysztof Soszynski v Stephan Bonnar respectively). Then, there is the not-so-small issue of Brock Lesnar.
It’s the closest thing MMA has to a fairytale. The UFC Heavyweight World Champion becomes unbelievably unwell, near death — then makes a triumphant return against possibly the most dangerous striker in MMA history. Love or loathe him, no one can deny Brock Lesnar the title of number one heavyweight in MMA, and not just because Fedor lost…

Who is the best in the world at 170lbs? That’s an easy one right? The consensus top five pound for pound and UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. But while “Rush” prepares to defend his belt against Dan Hardy at UFC 111, Nick Diaz is making a case as the fighter that poses the biggest threat to him at 170lbs.
Since his departure from the UFC, Diaz has reeled off an impressive streak of 7-1 and 1 no contest. The lone loss came via doctor stoppage due to cuts above his eye to KJ Noons and Diaz submitted then top five lightweight Takanori Gomi with a gogoplata before the NSAC ruled it a no contest due to a positive marijuana test.
At 26 years old, Diaz seems to be finally hitting his stride.
