Rampage and Rashad stare-down at UFC 96
This wrap up comes a little late but the show still deserves its due publicity so here we go.
The main event featured one of the most anticipated grudge matches in UFC history. Rampage has had a problem with Rashad Evans ever since he fought Rampage’s teammate Hector Ramirez back in 2004. Ramirez suffered an injury in a fight the day before and basically fought Evans on one leg. Rampage felt Rashad did a little too much showboating in the fight and let him know about it when Rashad approached him after the fight about training with him. The bad blood started there and continued after Rampage beat Rashad’s teammate Keith Jardine at UFC 96 and continued into The Ultimate Fighter show.

Rumor has it, from Rampage Jackson himself, that he is done with MMA, most notably of course his home in the UFC. Dana White is a master of the PR wars, often times doing whatever it takes, including making himself a target, to get what he wants in the end. Rampage is playing a dangerous game engaging Dana in a battle like this, especially after his incident where he Rampaged through SoCal streets in his custom-decal-laden truck. Dana and the UFC were there to bail out their star. Rampage sounds conflicted when talking about his decision to
leave the UFC.
The UFC has done a lot for me but I think I have done more for them. The UFC bought WFA to get my contract & they saved my life, so I felt loyal to them. They pushed me into a fight with Chuck Liddell even when I clearly stated I wasn’t ready to fight for the belt because the American fans didn’t know me but I took the fight and didn’t complain & after I won the American fans booed me for the first time which changed the way I saw them & it hurt me deeply.
Rampage, truly out of character (but still clearly himself) in a blog posting, declares how hurt has has been over certain things, namely Dana White joking about Rampage’s relationship with his father and decision to make this movie. The A-Team film can be huge for Rampage, no doubt. If it is a smash hit and is signed on for sequels, merchandising, TV spin-offs and whatever else, Quinton Jackson will be a household name. If it opens up the door for other action films and he becomes a Hollywood darling, even better.

Rampage Jackson was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Costa Mesa, California. Details below.

Just for the record, it’s worth noting a couple things:
-Rampage has a previous conviction for assault stemming from an incident in junior college. In case you’re a bit new to the sport, a younger Quinton Jackson beat a wrestling teammate half to death with a telephone because he had wanted to make a call.
-Quinton went to a hospital rather than jail. A lot has been made of this, but it’s potentially a red herring. He may have claimed a medical condition of some sort or mental illness as a “get out of jail free” card. As bad as the mental health wards of most emergency rooms in the country are, I would venture a guess that the one in Beverly Hills is probably nicer than a holding cell.
-For all the money and fame, Dana White had to fly out and post bail. I wonder if Rampage bought a few too many fur coats? Shouldn’t all these athletes be forced to sit down and watch “Mike Tyson: Beyond the Glory?” Save your money guys.

Following the final bell of last night’s UFC light heavyweight championship title bout, Forrest Griffin could be heard thanking the cornermen who helped him reach this moment:
“Thank you guys so f—ing much… Seriously, I don’t say it enough.”
Griffen had yet to be declared victorious in the bout, but had already proven more than capable to go blow for blow with the world’s very best. His transition from the brawler of three years ago to today’s tactical world class Mixed Martial Artist is complete, with more than a little help from his friends. It was a Forrest Griffin I never expected to see.
The only response from his cornermen came (appropriately enough) from UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture, who quietly replied, “it was an honor.”
For the rest of us, it was a moment to remember — one of many in last night’s classic UFC title fight and my “fight of the year” so far.

DISCUSS THIS STORY IN THE TOTAL-MMA.COM FORUMS

Wanderlei Silva knocks out Keith Jardine in under a minute. Goran Reljic knocks out Wilson Gouveia after a round and a half of sloppily striking around the cage. Sure, there were other light heavyweight fights on the card last night, and fights from other divisions that were better, but these two fights helped to spiral a division even further out of control. How is it possible for one division to have no idea where to go next, let’s take a look at some of the fighters and figure out why,

Discuss this article, Nogueira winning the title, Tim Sylvia’s loose bowels and Rampage being on the shelf for a reality show and much, much more at the Total-MMA forums!
When most people think of PRIDE fighters making the jump to the UFC, they will think of the death of the “PRIDE Myth.” If you are unfamiliar with the PRIDE myth, for years the talking point on the internet and through word of mouth was that PRIDE was home to better fighters. When you’d look at rankings on the internet, for years PRIDE fighters dominated them, with UFC being seen as having a shallow talent pool comparatively. Since then, top fighters such as Mirko Cro Cop, Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio Rua, Heath Herring and a few others have had a rough time transitioning to the UFC. Explanations have been everything from atmosphere changes, adapting to fighting in a cage as opposed to a ring to a stricter drug testing policy, implying that PRIDE fighters were all roided up monsters.
