UFC 91: Lesnar vs. Couture

Posted by Lee Casebolt on 14th November 2008

Let’s be honest here.  Saturday’s UFC (I don’t bother to count them anymore) is pretty much a one fight card.  I mean, all due respect to Tamden McCrory, no one’s tuning in to watch him and Dustin Hazelett, however good their matchup might be.  Demian Maia might be a top up and coming middleweight, but his bout with Nate Quarry is a keeping-busy fight.  And why are Jorge Gurgel and Aaron Riley even on a UFC card?  Did we go back in time five years and no one tell me?

No, if you’re shelling out the bucks to see this show, you’re there for one reason and one reason only – to see if Brock Lesnar really is the next big thing in MMA, or if Randy Couture can pull off yet another miracle win over what appears to be a physically superior opponent.  On one side, you’ve got (comparative) youth, size, speed, and power.  On the other, experience, savvy, and legendary conditioning.  So how does tomorrow’s main event go?  Read the rest of this entry »

Evan Tanner: 1971-2008

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 9th September 2008

Late last night, it was made official that the body of Evan Tanner had been found in the desert of Southern California. Tanner was champion for the United States Shoot Wrestling Federation, a UFC Middleweight champion, and a one time challenger to the light heavyweight crown in the UFC. He has been on a myriad of adventures over the last few years and has blogged extensively about them. Recently, Evan notified the MMA community at large of his plans to enter the desert, informing all that “any failure of equipment” could prove deadly. Sadly, it is apparent that such has occured.

Our various writers now remember Evan Tanner:

Total MMA’s UFC 88 Roundtable

Posted by Lee Casebolt on 5th September 2008

This Saturday, ZUFFA presents their best-ever lineup of semi-main events and undercard bouts.  UFC 88 is stacked top to bottom with compelling matchups in four weight divisions, many with title fight implications.  Though it lacks a title bout or the kind of transcendent matchup which would cap off a truly classic card, it’s a night of fights which, on paper, should not disappoint.  Our panel -

  • CH: Chris Henderson
  • AC: Alan Conceicao
  • TH: Thomas Hackett
  • DW: Dave Walsh
  • LC: Lee Casebolt

Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling, -55kg and -60kg

Posted by Lee Casebolt on 13th August 2008

If you’re an American without a very select internet provider, your choices are slim for combat sports.  Women’s saber showed up over the weekend, thanks to a dominating performance by the American team, and of course CNBC has all the boxing a reasonable person could ask for.  If you are a fan of judo, though, you can only thank your lucky stars for fine individuals like Kendall Shields, the folks at youtube, and whatever torrent service with access to foreign tv you can find.  If you stay up til the wee hours, or have a DVR (or, like the rest of us in the Dark Ages, a VCR), you can get small snippets of the King of Sports.  I refer, of course, to wrestling, which started on Monday. Fury FC Play by Play and Review

Posted by Lee Casebolt on 13th July 2008

Sherdog’s live stream began at 7pm, my time.  Fifty five minutes of cringe-worthy techno later, it’s time to get started.  That’s what they mean by “Brazilian Time”.
