Fedor: “Nature is always more tasty.”

Posted by Dave Walsh on 13th January 2009

Affliction’s second offering, “Day of Reckoning” is right around the corner, and it sort of seems like there is very little in the way of advertising muscle put into it. While one could easily argue that the first Affliction show was not advertised heavily either, there was at least a bit more hype surrounding the show. It even seems like the websites that pushed Affliction: Banned heavily in the lead up to it in July (this one included) have not shown the same levels of support. Let’s face it, this card isn’t the blockbuster that the first card was.

Affliction have been a bit more sparse with sending out interviews and promotional material to the media that supported them the first time around as well. That said, once in a while they send something that is just outrageous, today was one of those times. Today they sent around a press release ‘Demystifying’ the great Fedor. Did you know that Fedor likes American action movies? Apparently he hasn’t seen any in a while, as his favorite actor is Bruce Willis. Here is, in list format, why Fedor is a real man’s man.

Looking Back at UFC 92

Posted by Dave Walsh on 29th December 2008

(C) UFCUFC 92 has come and gone, and we, the fans were treated to quite an event to cap off another productive year for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Some good, some bad, some indifferent and some just baffling, this was UFC 92. Thoughts.

Cheick Kongo: Nobody is really talking about Kongo and they probably should. No, they shouldn’t be saying, “man what a beast” or even “wow is that guy great.” No, that shouldn’t be the first thing that comes to your mind. While they are pretty apt conclusions to come to after watching him, I think it really needs to be said; LOW BLOWS. Just like people tend to shy away from Chuck Liddell’s thumb to the eye, Cheick Kongo has shown when he gets frustrated or in a tight spot, his first instinct is to knee his opponent in the testicles. After dissecting Cro Cop after repeated low knee strikes, it was questionable. Now with his win over Mustapha al Turk by returning the favor after al Turk hit an unintentional low blow, Kongo came back with what was a blatant and brutal low blow. Al Turk had no chance after that, which he probably should have taken his full five minutes.

UFC 92: A Complete PPV Card

Posted by Dave Walsh on 26th December 2008

UFC 92 is a card that offers intrigue to as broad of an audience as the UFC can ever target, with fights that appeal to the newer viewer as well as the established MMA viewer. The Light heavyweight Championship Main Event between Rashad Evans and current defending Champion Forrest Griffin will be the first time that two “home grown” Zuffa stars have fought over a major title on PPV. One of the other main attractions pits Interim Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira against former (pre-TUF-era) Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir after a stint as coaches on the most recent season of TUF, as Nog being the most successful submission fighter from Japan in the weight class, and Mir from America. Then Light heavyweight stand-outs Wanderlei Silva faces off with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson in what should be a war.

Each fight has their appeals, with Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira for the Interim Heavyweight Championship having weeks of build from this season of the Ultimate Fighter for fans who aren’t familiar with either man all too much. While the animosity between the two wasn’t as heated as some of the past seasons, it was enough build up between them to want fans to see submission artist vs. submission artist. Nogueira having submission victories in UFC over Heath Herring and former Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia to capture the Interim Heavyweight title, and Frank Mir having a submission victory over current Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, both men have proved their mettle at the ground game enough to interest fans in who is the better jiu-jitsu fighter. For older fans, we have two Heavyweight Champions of the same era from different companies facing off. What is interesting is that upon his return from injury, Mir did very little to prove his worth to fans and was, by all means, being fed to Lesnar before he held on for dear life to submit Lesnar, propelling him into insta-stardom in Zuffa’s UFC. Most fans who know both well see this fight as Nogueira’s to lose and Mir getting another chance at the limelight which most likely isn’t deserved.

REVIEWED: Total MMA by Jonathan Snowden

Posted by Dave Walsh on 21st December 2008

As the sport of Mixed Martial Arts grows, as does the public’s interest with the fighters, the personalities and the history of the sport. Of course, to meet that demand that means that publishers are going to start to demand books on the subject are available. With that being said, Total MMA: Inside Ultimate Fighting by Jonathan Snowden sets itself away from the rest of the pack by doing what nobody else has done; present a thorough history of Mixed Martial Arts dating back to the inception of Judo and everything else leading up to modern Mixed Martial Arts. Not only is it the information that sets Total MMA apart, but the narrative style and passion the writer has for the sport of MMA.

The Ultimate Fighter Finale — Team Mir vs. Team Nog LiveBlog

Posted by Dave Walsh on 13th December 2008

So, after a day long marathon of some uneasy moments, some sub-KOTC-level bitch-slapfests and things that make Ivan Trembow feel uncomfortable about watching Mixed Martial Arts, it is time for the finals o this season of The Ultimate Fighter. Hopefully you’ve been following Kendall’s breakdowns of each and every episode, or if you are like me, you are in the process of digesting the entire show on a slow Saturday afternoon, either way, we’ll be providing you with live analysis of The Ultimate Fighter Finale.

[F]EDOR IS COMING; Are you Ready, Andrei?

Posted by Dave Walsh on 25th November 2008

The big questions right now seem to revolve around Affliction; will this second show finally happen? Will it draw? Can Fedor vs. Arlovski break 20,000 buys? The first time they attempted to run this show it was with Josh Barnett vs. Andrei Arlovski headlining, and apparently ticket sales and interest was so sluggish that the show was scrapped altogether. The second time, it was due to a possible Goldenboy deal that things fell through.

Of course, instead of talking about the fight itself, the focus seems to be on Affliction’s ability to sell tickets and PPV buys. Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski is a big, big fight. Many people have simply written Arlovski out as, well, Fedor is Fedor, but I think people are forgetting exactly what Arlovski is capable of. This year alone we have seen him dismantle the best that IFL’s heavyweight division had to offer, once on Affliction PPV, the other time on national television in front of millions of viewers.

No More Heroes: Chris Leben Takes Drugs

Posted by Dave Walsh on 3rd November 2008

LebenWell, part of being a fan of MMA and following the careers of certain fighters, or even entire organizations is the understanding that you are going to be continually let down. In recent memory, some of the biggest let downs have been a sober, getting his life back together Evan Tanner going out into the desert without ample supplies and dying alone, baking under a 115 degree sun. It has made the rounds today that Chris Leben has tested positive for steroids. The reaction is that he has been suspended for 9 months and 1/3 of his purse has been witheld from him.

While not surprising in any way (a fighter, on drugs!), it is disappointing. Leben is a guy that has always talked about how he is a “New Chris Leben” and training harder than he ever has before, having his life in order and so on. Granted, Leben’s biggest problem area has always been alcohol, but regardless, testing positive for Stanozolol is not a step any fighter wants to make in their career.

Was Anderson Silva Really Goofing Off?

Posted by Dave Walsh on 27th October 2008

The fallout over Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote continues on. There is debate pretty much everywhere, with fans and journalists alike taking their sides and sticking to it. I’ve made my voice heard in the matter, as have an Irate Kevin Iole, an embarassed Fightlinker, and, well, just look for yourself, it is endless.

Everybody has an opinion on if Anderson Silva embarassed himself, shamed his family, has forced Dana White’s hand, if he was disrespecting Patrick Cote, if he was afraid of Patrick Cote. Is Anderson Silva simply a prima-donna and looking to move his career on to greener pastures? While I do not think this will be settled until we see Anderson Silva in the ring again, duking it out (hopefully soon?), we can have a look at the numbers for this fight and see what they tell us.

For what was throw in this fight, and who was leading who, it is clear that Anderson Silva was unchallenged. Question the method all that you want, but stats are telling the story that we all saw. I have to wonder, if Silva scored  a leg kick right before Cote buckled, or even a nasty kick that ended the fight, would any of this backlash exist? Probably not.

Update: Good article on this subject posted by Mike Chiappetta of NBC Sports — Is Silva worthy of criticism for Cote fight?

Also how about some Compustrike stats?

Anderson Silva: Too Good for MMA

Posted by Dave Walsh on 26th October 2008

I am in disbelief right now. I am in absolute disbelief at the discrepancy between what I saw last night and what I am reading and hearing today. I was hearing the rumblings of it last night, but I decided to sleep on it before writing on it; maybe people would have a more clear mind in the morning. Maybe. I want to start this off saying that martial arts was something that intensely interested me as a child. Watching Bruce Lee movies, Jackie Chan movies, those goofy Shanghai guys-on-wires films excited me enough to get into Kenpo. The ideals of martial arts, the idea of not wanting to brutally assault and harm somebody, and being subtle, has always enamored me.

When the concept of UFC first started up, the idea was enthralling to me. Here was chance for this to become a reality; martial artists from all walks of life descending upon a closed atmosphere, with no rules except for some basic gentleman’s rules, and go at it. It was great to see the street fighters get picked apart, the brawlers meet the calmness and serenity of Royce Gracie’s jiu-jitsu. The sport has changed, drastically. I am not saying in a bad direction, but simply in a different direction. It is no longer about martial arts as much as it is about fighting, as it is winning and getting paid your backstage, unreported bonus. Anderson Silva has transcended all of this. Last night, Anderson Silva was not in any way a MMA fighter, he was a martial artist completely on top of his game.
