Olympic Boxing: The Final Day

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 25th August 2008

After over 270 fights, boxing at the Olympics finally wrapped up earlier this afternoon. Sadly, NBC showed very limited coverage of the last day’s gold medal matches, which comes as a surprise after such extensive coverage earlier. Still, three of the 6 bouts saw airtime in the US.

Olympic Boxing: Quarterfinals End (51/75KG)

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 21st August 2008

Entering the Olympics, the one truly uncertain thing was the Cuban national team. After numerous attempted and successful defections by top fighters, it looked as if their grip on the world scene perhaps was coming to a close. That was the idea, anyways. Reality has returned and returned hard, and after the last qualifiers for the medal rounds were completed, Cuba dominance could hardly be denied.

Olympic Boxing: 54/57/91+KG Quarters

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 19th August 2008

Roberto Cammarelle looks for Olympic Gold at Super Heavy. But is there an upset brewing?

The magic of the Olympic draw is the size. At the AIBA World Championships, anyone can send a fighter. Anyone. And they get thrown in a draw of 60-80 fighters and the tournament seems to never end. The Olympics knock that number in half. This gives you the very best, the sorta good, and people given spots because the committee was nice. Sometimes that is a recipe for surprises.

Olympic Boxing: The Quarters Begin!

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 18th August 2008

The rawest of the Americans, Deontay Wilder will win the US’ only medal. But what color?

Its been a wild weekend in Beijing as far as boxing goes, with favorite after favorite being dismissed and analysts left wondering if anyone actually wants to win a medal. There’s been press conferences about scoring, questions about the reffing, talk of conspiracy theories and fixes. In other words, your average Olympic boxing session.

Boxing: Coverage of First Preliminary Round

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 14th August 2008

(Rau’Shee Warren’s blunder potentially cost the US its best chance at a medal. What next?)

Unlike my compatriots in wrestling and judo, boxing has the slight issue when it comes to day to day coverage of taking forever. Judo is basically all over with and boxing has merely just begun, with another prelim round to go before we even hit quarterfinals. And to think, its roughly half as many fights as the World Championships. But I digress. Its been quite the storied week thus far.

Get To Know: Boxing’s Heavyweight Division

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 12th July 2008

(Like David Hasselhoff: despised in the US, beloved by the masses in Germany. WBO/IBF Heavyweight champ, Ring #1 heavyweight, Wladimir Klitschko. )

This Saturday night sees the return of the closest thing to a unified heavyweight champion in combat sports with the return of Wladimir Klitschko, WBO and IBF Heavyweight champion in a mandatory defense of his belts against the lightly regarded Tony Thompson (HBO, 4:30PM Saturday). Who? Anthony “Tiger” Thompson. You know, the #1 American heavyweight? Oh wait, if you live outside of continental Europe, you probably don’t know much about the heavyweight division. Well, fear not US/Canadian citizen, I can help with that, and what better way than to talk about the 50 best heavyweights on the planet?

edit: already slightly tweaked from last night! THE EXCITEMENT~

Weekend Rundown (6/27-6/29)

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 27th June 2008

From this week forward, I’ll be doing my best to try and run down all the major events of the weekend ahead here in this section in the world of combat sport. Whether its boxing, K-1 kickboxing, or MMA, this will hopefully become the one stop shop for where and when you can see the best (and occasionally far from best) action for the weekend.

Boxing’s #1 fighter, Strikeforce’s world class lightweight champ, and the most dominant K-1 heavyweight ever all take to the ring and/or cage this weekend.
