Fedor: “Nature is always more tasty.”

Posted by Dave Walsh on January 13th, 2009

Affliction’s second offering, “Day of Reckoning” is right around the corner, and it sort of seems like there is very little in the way of advertising muscle put into it. While one could easily argue that the first Affliction show was not advertised heavily either, there was at least a bit more hype surrounding the show. It even seems like the websites that pushed Affliction: Banned heavily in the lead up to it in July (this one included) have not shown the same levels of support. Let’s face it, this card isn’t the blockbuster that the first card was.

Affliction have been a bit more sparse with sending out interviews and promotional material to the media that supported them the first time around as well. That said, once in a while they send something that is just outrageous, today was one of those times. Today they sent around a press release ‘Demystifying’ the great Fedor. Did you know that Fedor likes American action movies? Apparently he hasn’t seen any in a while, as his favorite actor is Bruce Willis. Here is, in list format, why Fedor is a real man’s man.

Fedorable Facts:

  • Fedor’s mom made him choose between the accordian and judo
  • Fedor enjoys hip hop.
  • Favorite actor? Bruce Willis.
  • Favorite foods? A ‘good’ steak and lobster.
  • Fedor as a child? Responsible. Studied and did judo.
  • Fedor’s diet? Three meals a day, and sadly, he refuses to allow himself candy.
  • Fedor also, sadly, does not allow himself to drink vodka whilst training.
  • Travel preferences? Places with ’scary’ roller coasters.
  • Hobbies? Fedor likes to draw. I don’t know what, but he likes to do it.

There were also some fun quotes on different subjects:

What is your relationship with Vladimir Putin?

“We do not talk on a regular basis. It is just that he had seen one of my fights on TV and took an interest. Vladimir Putin has always been very kind to me and I have always appreciated his interest in my career and the sport of MMA. We have in common our love for Sambo, the National sport in Russia as well as MMA. Vladimir Putin is a black belt in Judo and a master in Sambo. I have promised him that I would always participate in Sambo if I was able to, so that I could be a role model for young people in Russia and continue the rich tradition of the sport. After I beat Matt Lindland in Russia, Vladimir Putin was very kind and invited all of the fighters and their camps to the Presidential Mansion.”

Do your kids know what you do? Have they ever seen you fight or watched one of your fights on tape?

“My youngest is too young, but the oldest knows. She has never seen me fight however.”

Oh yeah, and there is a fight happening as well, against some dude in designer boxer briefs with a pet bulldog and a web-based documentary about his training.

Do you think this will be one of the hardest fights of your career?

“Yes, Andrei is a very skilled and dangerous fighter, another tough UFC Champion on my resume. I expect a very difficult fight similar to my fights with Noguiera. I must be very prepared.”

I’m still stoked, are you?

  1. Thomas Hackett Says:

Yes, I am stoked. That’s an awesome interview, too. It sounds like Fedor is still with the trainer who bought him a judogi when he was 12 and his family couldn’t afford one for him.

  2. Dave Walsh Says:

    Yes!

“At 12 years old, Fedor’s family could not afford to buy him the Judo suit and training shoes he needed for class, so his first trainer, Vasiley Gavrilov, bought them for him.

Fedor remains loyal to his earliest trainers, such as Vladimir Voronov, who has trained him since he was 12 years old, long before his MMA career began. Voronov specializes in Sambo and Judo.”
