Steve Cunningham is in a position few fighters dream of: Thursday night, he will contend for a vacant Ring belt in the Cruiserweight division, marking him perhaps only the fifth recognized champion in the history of the division. He goes in the favorite, and does so near his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. What is so stunning about this story is that apart from reairing of his first bout with Krzysztof Wlodarczyk on some of the FSN affiliates, none of his fights have ever been televised in the United States. Such is the luck of the big-but-not-so-big men.
Contrasting with his story is the dominant heavyweight of his era and a man who used the cruiserweight division as a stepping stone, as well as a junior welterweight showdown with potentially massive implications in 2009.

After a weekend that saw the biggest night in heavyweight kickboxing (and argurably the sport in general) and the biggest night in boxing for 2008, its hard to believe it may be topped without a single PPV card on the bill. But with 5 boxing cards and 3 MMA events scheduled for national television, it’s hardly a ridiculous notion. In our first of two parts, we detail the 3 MMA cards promised for the next 6 days.

I think that if you are a fan of combat sports this weekend really turned out to be something special. While there really wasn’t much going on for Mixed Martial Arts, for events having the word “boxing” in them it was one hell of a weekend. Starting off last night with the amazing K1 World Grand Prix Finals (summed up by the young Andrew Rosebrock) and then ending with a bang tonight with Oscar De La Hoya being dismantled by Manny Pacquiao for eight rounds straight. Alan and myself have gotten some flack in the past over not being excited, but you can rest assured that this weekend had both of us going crazy.
Postmodern K1 endings!
Remy Bonjasky flying rib kicks!
Golden Boy pulp!
Badr Hari with a cattle gun!

I say this without exaggeration: This was the best single night of fights I’ve ever seen. (That it was transmitted in glorious high-definition live on the vanity cable network of an eccentric billionaire didn’t hurt.)
On we go.

Is it just me, friends, or did the week off really suck the life out of this thing? I understand that Thanksgiving is not the best time to air new episodes of anything, and so, sure, a week off. But as a Canadian, I had already enjoyed Thanksgiving long, long ago (we harvest in mid-June to avoid frost issues, basically), and so I simply felt abandoned. And now it all seems so distant. Wait, wait, there were some . . . dudes? In a . . . house? And they were supposed to train and compete but they mostly . . . jerked . . . off . . . into . . . sushi! That’s it! Yeah, OK cool, I’m back.

It’s another polished performance for the “Golden Boy.”
