Tonight is WEC. Three title fights, Carlos f’n Condit and a bunch of debuts. Should be an awesome show, so join us for our live coverage of WEC!
Brian Bowles vs. Damacio Page
R1. WEC is available in high def, which I do not have. Both guys come out swinging. Bowles with some heavy hands and Page with some fists and high kicks. Goes to the ground when Page slips on a kick, then a few elbows to the crown of the head by Page. Tight guillotine in by Bowles, but Page slips out and presses him against the cage. After some action, its back to the feet.
Bowles goes in and Page with some knees and a kick, Bowles in again and Page with a high kick, Page now sticking his tongue out to mock him. Page keeping his hands down and mocking Bowles. Bowles gets a guilllotine while Page is standing, Page tries to slam him but Bowles is on him so tight that by the time they hit the mat, he is choked out. Awesome, awesome choke by Bowles, who remains undefeated.
The TapouT crue is back, guys! Season 2! Wait, you didn’t watch the first season? Same here. Miguel Torres being in the crowd is way more exciting than Rashad Evans, as is Urijah Faber.
Jamie Varner vs. Marcus Hicks — Lightweight Championship
The first of the title fights comes in WEC’s 155lbs Division. Varner defends his title for the first time against a very game Marcus Hicks. These guys aren’t very good at trash talking, sadly.
R1. Steve Mazzagatti still somehow gets selected to referee professional fights. Hicks starts off slamming Varner, and then gets his signature guillotine on, only for Varner to get out. Hicks is, like expected, setting quite a pace. Varner trying to keep some distance with some kicks, then a few awesome knees, and Hicks goes for a takedown, only to get pushed off, kneed again, and then some great punches. Some more. Hicks is down, he is done for, and Mazzagatti is the ref. Endless knees, then a few straight rights and it takes Hicks hitting the mat hard for this to be over. Just like expected, Mazzagatti is a really bad ref and somebody almost died.
Impressive showing by Varner here tonight, though. Varner in the postfight seems like way too nice of a dude.
Brock Larson vs. Carlo Prater from the prelims has made the show.
R1.Starts off tentative and Larson comes in with a big left hand and it is over. Prater is down and really out of it.
I hope it just isn’t me, but I was in the other room while Larson was talking and didn’t understand a damned word.
Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell — Lighty Heavyweight Championship
Stann comes out to Jane’s Addiction and was a Marine, so maybe he isn’t so bad.
R1. Cantwell is being a lot more pensive this time around as both men are throwing shots without having much luck, outside of Stann’s leg kicks. Cantwell with a left, some knees and Stann fires back and it ends up on the cage. Cantwells lands a few big shots, getting the better of an exchange. Cantwell goes for a superman punch, then gets caught in mid air, ends up with his legs pinned by his head getting nails in the face, rolls over and Stann is hitting some crossfaces. Cantwell able to hold out for the end of the round.
R2. Cantwell looks to have gotten hit in the balls early on after going for some Lyoto-esque kicks. Some more defensive stand up here. Cantwell has some good strikes but seems unsure of himself when he throws an doesn’t follow up. H lands a nice combo and ends up clinching Stann against the cage. Cantwell has Stann against the cage and gets a few very nice shots off, and Stann looks gassed. A nice mid kick, knee and some rights and lefts, Stann is just trying to keep to his feet and not eat a lot of damage. Cantwell can’t seem to figure out how to finish him and Stann just kind of falls over once he stops leaning against the cage.
Micah Miller vs. Josh Grispi
I keep wanting to call him Crispie, but I won’t. Although, give it time and it might just slip out.
R1. Micah Miller basicaly got his clock cleaned. That is the only way to say it. He catches a right to the temple and takes a few shots on the ground and Herb stops it. Miller jumps to his feet to protest, but you know, he wasn’t defending himself.
It is really weird seeing a kid this young as an accomplished MMA fighter. 12-1 at age 19.
I really want some night vision sunglasses. European style!
Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura — Welterweight Championship
R1. We start off with Condit going for leg kicks. Condit still more leg kicks after he defends a JUDO~ throw. Condit with a knee and then gets JUDO TOSSED for his trouble. They are up, a little more standup, and a leg sweep by Miura, then another sweep to the ground. Condit with some good headwork and then drops him with a rign, knee right on his face while he is on top, grinding his elbow into Miura’s face. Condit has him in a crucifix as Miura is fighting, but just gets off of the cage. Condit goes for an armbar and Miura escapes, then JUDO THROW (Harai Goshi, I am told). Ground to finish the round. There was a lot of judo in this round. I want to give this one to Miura for the amount of times he did an awesome judo move.
R2. Condit downs Miura with a body shot that more or less just pushed Miura down. Condit up and eats an upkick, then spins onto him, then does a fancy pass just to get put back into half guard. Miura tries to sweep him and ends up mounted. Condit gives up his back and Condit going for an armbar and Miura is trying to fight it and get gets out! Ref stands them up after a short bit of inactivity. Miura misses a throw and Condit takes his back, but Miura rolls into pulling guard.
R3. Miura goes for another throw and Condit jumps onto his back, and then gets a guillotine in from the top! He lets go for a mount. Condit with some elbows from the top while he catches his breath. He gets swept and Miura will not back down or slow down. Miura impressive with some GNP from the guard and Condit works his way up and follows up with an awesome knee and a few strikes. Condit looks to be going for a topside triangle, which would rule, but now has the back. He spins around but Condit has him mounted. Condit with some GNP but isn’t putting his all into it. Some elbows now, Miura is still defending himself and gives him his back. Remember he is a judo guy so giving up his back seem snatural. He is fighting the choke off pretty well. Wow, Miura is impressive.
R4. Wow, Round 4? Miura with some big shots, goes to thow Condit and Condit opts to go to the ground. Miura looks to have a guillotine attempt on Condit, but Condit on top. Condit, then, is swept. Miura going for some strikes and Condit going for a kneebar. Yes, a kneebar. Miura now into Condit’s guard. Clean break. Just arms flying everywhere and it ends up with Condit on top again. Miura able to reverse and he is hella active from being in Condit’s guard. Like almost finished from that guard with punches. On the feet, Miura misses a right and takes a knee, he drops down but goes for the leg of Miura and Condit with hammer blow after hammer blow finishes it. Wow. Great fight.
Miura really gave that his all. The fight finished more from exhaustion than from a strong knockout.
