Treading Water in 2008: An Impending North American MMA Implosion?

Posted by Dave Walsh on 28th August 2008

This right now is a pivotal point in history for the fledgling sport of Mixed Martial Arts. In the past few months we have seen one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s self-proclaimed rivals, the IFL crumble to the ground, with EliteXC looking like it might follow. Both are publicly held companies, and if anything, there are lessons to be found in each one, as every aspect of their business plans are available for us to view. There is still no word if Zuffa has outright purchased the IFL or if they have simply bought out a few fighter contracts and licensed some footage to use for highlights for said fighters. The IFL announced earlier today that they are 35.7 million dollars in the hole, with a grand total of 4 remaining employees right now. It is safe to say that the International Fight League was an interesting approach to capitalizing on the MMA boom, but an untimely failure.

Olympic Boxing: A Final Look Back

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 27th August 2008

There’s still a haze in the air after the warfare that took place over two weeks in Beijing. Vasyl Lomachenko (pictured above) was perhaps the only soul to come out above it all, because everyone else took a beating. The judges, referees, officials, boxing as a sport, announcers…well, not many of the fighters took beatings. This was hardly the most action packed of tournaments, after all. So with the AIBA under fire from both the outside and within, trying to start up a pro league, and 270+ bouts having happened in the meantime, where to start? The scoring is the obvious place. While other subjective sports don’t allow for statistical comparison, amateur boxing does. Do the statistics say anything at all about whether or not there were issues with the Olympic Games?

Olympic Boxing: The Final Day

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 25th August 2008

After over 270 fights, boxing at the Olympics finally wrapped up earlier this afternoon. Sadly, NBC showed very limited coverage of the last day’s gold medal matches, which comes as a surprise after such extensive coverage earlier. Still, three of the 6 bouts saw airtime in the US.

John Peretti: “When You Own the Fighters, You Own the Results”

Posted by Tommy Hackett on 24th August 2008

DISCUSS THIS STORY IN THE TOTAL-MMA.COM FORUMS

To coin a phrase, you may not know his name, but you certainly know his work.

One of the most important figures in the history of North American Mixed Martial Arts is unquestionably former Extreme Fighting and UFC matchmaker John Peretti. He can be credited with discovering a huge amount of martial arts talent, innovating rounds, gloves, and weight classes into North American MMA, and putting together some of the best matches in MMA history at a time when you might be rewarded with jail time for it.

He’s also always just struck me as one odd duck.

Listening to Peretti’s latest interview at Carson’s Corner did nothing to change that impression, but between hyping his bizzare and still unnamed new sport (which sounds like a strange brew of of MMA and an early Italian form of football) and startling his interviewer with brusque rebuttals, he also offered some interesting insight on the MMA game.

Olympic Boxing: Quarterfinals End (51/75KG)

Posted by Alan Conceicao on 21st August 2008

Entering the Olympics, the one truly uncertain thing was the Cuban national team. After numerous attempted and successful defections by top fighters, it looked as if their grip on the world scene perhaps was coming to a close. That was the idea, anyways. Reality has returned and returned hard, and after the last qualifiers for the medal rounds were completed, Cuba dominance could hardly be denied.

Affliction: The Ozzman Cometh

Posted by Dave Walsh on 21st August 2008

Affliction today announced that their next show on Oct. 11 will feature yet another metal performance. This time? Aging Godfather of Metal Ozzy Osbourne and his band will take the stage. The last Affliction picked up some reasonable flack from the Zuffa supporters for taking away from the “pure sport” atmosphere including Megadeth to their line-up. That aside, Megadeth played a great 3-song set and complimented the show perfectly, helping bring forward the style of show Affliction wants to present.  Read the rest of this entry »
