LiveBloggin’ EXC/CBS Saturday Night Fights II: Lawler vs. Smith II
Posted by Dave Walsh on July 26th, 2008

That’s right, we’ll be here live to give you the play-by-play and analysis on tonight’s EliteXC/CBS Saturday Night Fights!
The Showtime portion of the night has kicked off, so no rest for the wicked!
Wilson Reis v Brian Carraway
R1. Very active first round in another EXC exclusive weight class of 140. Close on the ground, with Carraway getting a few good shots in near the end of the round and taking Reis down, only for Carraway to take it from him. Seems to be the tale of the first round with takedowns by Reis and Carraway looking good on the ground scrambling and whatnot.
R2. Carraway looks really comfortable at the beginning of the round, hitting a pretty nice knee, but when it gets to the ground it is Reis again. Carraway actually gets on top of Reis in the last minute of the round, only for Reis get back on top, get some decent shots in and gain side control. The second round ends with them back up.
R3. This has kinda been all Reis so far, with Carraway landing a few nice shots. Awesome mid kick by Carraway, followed by a knee and Wilson smartly takes him down. The ground is all Reis, but Carraway is doing his best to not let Reis pass his guard and even trying a few upkicks to no avail. Reis finally gets the mount only for Carraway to roll ‘em over and get on top. From here, well, he really doesn’t have much to show for it. They get back to their feet and Carraway with a nice high kick followed by a knee that was caught and it is another takedown by Reis. Rosenthal stands them up for the last 30, flying knee from Carraway ends up guess where? Takedown.
Carraway throws his mouth piece in disgust after the bell. UD, 30/27 on all 3 scorecards for Reis.
Gus Johnson brings so much to the table for EXC that it makes everybody question why Mauro is still involved in MMA. Mauro hyping up Justin Eilers has to be an elaborate joke.
Rafael Feijao vs. Travis Galbraith looks to be next. For some reason we are getting a hype video for Galbraith, who has GABE on his pec. Ok. Gus Johnson keeps talking about UFC fighters, just like he did in the last show, and Feijao gets a hype video as well. I like the Godzilla font they use.
R1. Things start with stand up, with both dudes all about throwing low kicks that make them spin around. We now end up with Galbraith Tim Sylviaing Feijao against the cage, Feijao actually able to move off the cage only to get some knees to the face from the underhook position, which is impressive of GABE. Feijao get a clinch with some knees, Galbraith tries to take him down, only to just sort of pick him up, spin him around and daintly place him on his feet. Judoesque leg sweep (KS~) by Feijao only for things to move back to the ‘hug only for Feijao to clinch him and start destroying him with knees, overhand right and some strikes on the ground and Feijao just schooled Galbraith. Anderson Silva has trained him well, I suppose.
Scott Smith interview, and he doesn’t come off as the brightest bulb.
EliteXC Heavyweight Championship: Antonio Silva vs. Justin Eilers is the next fight. EXC is crowning their Heavyweight Champ on their undercard, and seeing as though this isn’t the most compelling fight in the world, it seems like a good idea.
Here is hoping that Eilers’ body implodes again like it did against Arlovski, because that was pretty funny.
R1. Eilers looks scared stiff to get in close with Silva. He keeps his head moving and tries to go for some jabs, but Silvas reach is far too long for him. Silva goes for a high kick to get the crowd amped. Silva double leg, now has the back and is hitting some crossfaces on him, following up with a knee to the ribs. Herb Dean warns about the shots to the back of the head, then stands them up and takes the point away from Silva for nother hit to the back of the head. Silva with some sloppy bombs.
The round ends and everybody realizes that the CBS broadcast starts right now. This is some really bad planning.
R2. Silva destroys Eilers, period.
Begin CBS broadcast. Ever want to see Frank Shamrock, his smooshed nose and GOLDEN BRACES in HD? Now is your chance.
Shayna Baszler vs. Chris Cyborg starts things out. Shayna claims a Flying V guitar is her ‘axe’ and a sign of how badass she is. I’d argue that Megadeth could make this show better.
R1. STEVE. MAZZAGATTI. Mazza looks sorta like he is perving out over this fight. This should be great. It ends up on the ground early on, Baszler going for a kneebar, Frank seems giddy. Mauro tells us that Baszler ‘works under’ Josh Barnett. I’m pretty sure he means it in both ways, as it is Mauro. He is now talking about Karl Gotch. Shut up, Mauro. Cyborg is fighting like a Chute Boxe fighter, which you know, makes sense. Baszler is all about sticking this out on the ground.
Josh Zhixel brings up that Cyborg might just be Wanderlei in drag.
R2. Cyborg comes out wailing away and hits a big knee, has Baszler against the cage, Baszler goes for a takedown, goes behind and Cyborg uses her ass to push her to the ground. Baszler for some reason goes for a kick and now gets a very Wanderlei knee from the clinch. This looks baaaaad for Baszler. She is just basically taking shots with her hands up. Baszler goes down after a few strikes and Mazzagatti for some reason doesn’t stop the fight, although Cyborg is stradling the cage like she won. This is hilarious. Baszler able to recover and Cyborg looks incredibly confused. Baszler goes down from a hard right and Steve actually stops the fight this time.
I fully expect Steve Mazzagatti to be insulted heavily for this. So now we interview Gina Carano as opposed to the fighters, oh Pro Elite.
Jake Shields vs. Nick Thompson coming up next. Frank Shamrock in another MMA 101 package. I swear, Zubaz. We are seeing Zubaz on network TV in 2008 on Nick Thompson, as well as a freaking neckeard.
R1. Steve Mazzagatti again, when will people ever learn? Shields takes him down right away, passes to mount and spins around so Thompson can’t push off of the cage. He has his legs locked up, but Thompson able to get out, only for Shields to get on top and choke him out with a guillotine from the top. Yes, from the top. That easy.
I actually sort of agree with Mauro, as he mentioned that Nick Diaz will be “in action” next. Basically implying that it is Nick Diaz vs. a guy he is intended to destroy handily.
Nick Diaz vs. Thomas Denny comes up next, and Diaz actually gets a pretty awesome video package for this fight. Because he rules. We’ll just say that it seems like Noons wasn’t about fighting Diaz in his home turf. Johnson just called Kimbo polished and articulate. I’ve been reading Moby Dick again, and I am imagining Thomas Denny’s beard on many of said characters now. Thomas Denny: Bringing classic literature to life.
Nick Diaz getting a great reaction. We can only hope that Dave Meltzer makes some crass pro wrestling analogy for this. 209 chants for Diaz. Frank Shamrock says that Nick Diaz is simply misunderstood. They must be kindred spirits, except Nick Diaz is way more awesome. I get the feeling if Diaz loses (somehow), that this crowd will most likely legit murder Denny.
R1. Before the round even starts, Diaz gets bleeped out. Love it. Denny goes for a clinch and a knee that misses. Diaz swats a kick, takes Nick down only for Nick to just stand up. Diaz doing some signature letting Denny hit him only to show that it won’t knock him out (he never learns) as nick looks to take it to him. Denny goes to take him down, but Diaz going for a kimura, now going for an armbar from the bottom! Denny able to get on top of him, both guys standing and Denny landing some blows while Diaz comes back with some of his own. Diaz with a hook and uppercut to make the crowd go nuts. Diaz working over the midsection against the cage. Diaz with a big right hook, then a nice left after a few misses. Jab by Diaz and some dirty boxing. Denny lands with a superman punch, and this is just ticking Diaz off, although his right eye does look to be swelling up. Denny gets hit hard, trips, Diaz with some big uppercuts, some hooks and Denny is holding onto Diaz to stay on his feet and sort of just swinging wildly. Diaz with body blows, uppercuts and Denny is seriously out on his feet by the end of this round.
R2. Diaz is laughing. He is waving his arms around as he chases down Denny and is now raining down punches on him. Denny staggers back and falls over. Diaz with a punch while Denny is down, Diaz waves at the ref to stop it, hits another and the ref concedes to just end it. Denny is more or less an emaciated Tank Abbott.
Gus Johnson is like trying to outshout Mauro so he’ll shut up. Now it is basically Frank and Mauro shouting with each other. Just like we all expected, they cut the mic whenever Diaz is within range of the mic. Diaz dedicates his performance to a fallen friend and his girlfriend, ok? I think he just said he had a friend named Ching Chang Wang Chong. I’m not making this up. Ok?
EliteXC Middleweight Championship: Robbie Lawler (C) vs. Scott Smith. We get a replay of some of the highlights of the first fight. One has to wonder if they will have Mazzagatti ref this, as clearly, Mazzagatti is all about finishes, regardless of fouls. Shamrock talking through his braces is downright comical. They are kinda selling this as the family man, Scott Smith vs. Ghetto Robbie Lawler. I think they spent more time focusing the camera on Anderson Silva signing autographs than Scott Smith coming to the ring.
R1. Mauro tells us next to Batman vs. The Joker this is the fight of the summer. Robbie Lawler does a jumping high kick. I swear. We are getting a lot of stand up with nobody connecting. Just minutes of feeling out. More feeling out after clinching. Smith finally lands something and is chasing Lawler. Lawler plants himself in the center and starts keeping Smith at bay now to round out the first round. I’d say Smith might actually take this round.
R2. Lawler plants himself in the middle again and keeping Smith at bay, mid kick followed by a superman punch only for Smith to get Lawler against the cage and start landing some great blows. Lawler just holding Smith still and landing a really, really nasty left hook. Smith fights back. Clinching against the cage as Lawler is nailing him in the ribs. Lawler has the advantage against the cage still, and we have some blood going all over the place. Some nasty knees to the ribs by Lawler, Smith down, some blows while he is down, Smith back up, some more knees take him down, some more punches and it’t all over.

Alot of good fights here, none I’ll remember in a week’s time.

This was a good show, not stellar, but solid. Much better than their first outing, but won’t be remembered like Affliction.

Affliction’s a pretty high bar; hardly a fair comparison.
