Last Minute Weekend Picks - EliteXC and WEC

What can I tell you, CBS has a bigger budget, a bigger audience, and, consequently, a bigger logo.  Short and sweet, readers -

Saturday night EliteXC on CBS

Brett Rogers vs. Jon Murphy:  On the one hand, I want to root for anyone who comes from a group that calls itself the “Anthracite Combat Club” (from the Greek anthrakitis, a kind of coal), and on the other hand I don’t really care about a pair of mediocre heavyweights.  It actually offends me on a certain level that I’m watching these two and not, say, Carlton Haselrig.  Put a gun to my head and I go with the undefeated Rogers, but the only loser here is you, the viewer.

Phil Baroni vs. Joey Villasenor:  “Smokin’ Joe” only has to last one round; after five minutes Baroni can be had by virtually anyone who deserves to be fighting on television.  Keep your hands up and your chin down, Joey.  Villasenor by submission in the second.

Gina Carano vs. Kaitlin Young:  Way to be a pro, Gina.  In case you hadn’t heard, gentle Reader, Carano once again failed to make a contracted weight, and in doing so has forfeited 12.5% of her purse.  Why Shaw can’t just sign her to a 145lb fight is anyone’s guess.  Still, I expect her to roll over the undersized Young; that is what Young was brought in for, after all.  Carano, TKO in the first.

Robbie Lawler vs. Scott Smith:  Robbie kills Smith dead on live national television, stealing the spotlight from alleged headliner Kimbo Slice.

Kevin Ferguson vs. James Thompson:  Ferguson by TKO in the first.  If you’re smart enough to read this site, you know that already.

WEC on Versus

Kenneth Alexander vs. Rob McCullough:  Good news, “Razor Rob” - you get to erase the memory of your recent loss by avenging an earlier loss.  McCullough’s come a long way in the six years since he last fought Alexander, and I expect the twin motivating losses will cause him to kick Alexander’s head clean off before the end of the first.

Mark Munoz vs. Chuck Grigsby:  Grigsby’s a vet with sixteen fights and a 13-3 record, but he’s never seen anything even vaguely like former national wrestling champ Mark Munoz.  Expect Munoz to take him down and beat him up for a decision or third round stoppage.

Miguel Torres vs. Yoshiro Maeda:  If it weren’t for Faber/Pulver, this would be my most anticipated fight of the weekend.  Both have complete games, but I like Torres’ experience over Maeda.  Torres by submission in the third.

Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver:  Versus’ ads call it “the greatest cagefight in history”, which is hyperbolic in the extreme, even for fight promotion, but damn if this isn’t a great matchup.  Pulver’s an underrated defensive wrestler with a Liddell-esque sprawl and brawl game.  Faber’s simply the best 145lber on the planet.  The longer this stays on the feet, the better Pulver’s chances, but (and this hurts me to say) Faber’s simply too explosive and too talented to let that happen.  Faber by submission in the second.
