Frank Shamrock joins my boys the Fight Professor Stephen Quadros and former Total MMA columnist Mauro Ranallo on commentary.
Showtime Bouts
Kala Kolohe Hose vs. Frederic Belleton
Frederic Belleton wants to weeeeen. I want him to win too. He is a savate player, so he can take solace in the fact that Gerard Gordeau represented his art with honor. Except for the eye gouging. Hose is a Hawaiian brawler. Hard to believe, I know. He has a checkerboard on his chest. Seriously. A huge checkerboard. (Apparently a Hawaiian cultural thing. h/t Hackett)
Hose lands a series of body shots early but is gassed in the first half of the first round. The gas tank of a young Tank Abbott. Ends it with a brutal KO. Belleton was overmatched here. The KO made Frank giggle. “The knockout was so nice we showed it twice.” Ranallo is such a goof. Quadros tries to get Hose to call out Robbie Lawler. He doesn’t want any part of that.
Julie Kedzie vs. Tonya Evinger
Evinger is the girl who threw the fight with bravely stood and banged with Gina Carano. Julie Kedzie is the other girl who lost to Carano on Showtime. I guess there are only 3 girl fighters in the world? Evinger immediately gets the take down and chokes her out. Not much to see here.
Quadros interviews Ken Shamrock. He’ll be in Cage Rage in March to start “rollin some heads.” He teases the fight with Frank but no announcement. “My record at heavyweight is impeccable.”
This fight was supposed to be at 150 pounds, but both guys missed weight. Quach trains with Colin Oyama, the guy who famously yelled at Quinton Jackson when Jackson was telling him his ribs were broken. McMaster is a marine with the worst Boston accent ever. In the history of man. He’s so Aryan looking his new nickname should be Bobby McMaster Race.
Quach did well in the first round, scoring with a number of hard leg kicks and worked well out of the clinch. Nothing too dynamic, but two solid journeymen who are evenly matched.
The second round starts with Quach looking for a guillotine and McMaster slamming him down. They get to their feet and Quach continues to score with punches and kicks throughout the round. He doesn’t look to have much power but he’s wearing him down. Wearing himself down too.
Quach was “patient and aggressive” Quadros says. OK. Quach takes the third round too. Shamrock mentions McMaster’s complete inability to stop the leg kicks. It’s not 1996 anymore Bobby. 29-29, 30-27, 30-27 Quach. PUT YOUR HAT ON STRAIGHT BAO! Mauro says Quach has “more game than Parker Brothers.” Make it stop.
Frank Shamrock tells Quadros that “he helped create the sport.” He’s fighting Cung Le in the Battle of San Jose on March 29th.
Paul Daley vs. Sam Morgan
Sammy Morgan has ridiculous hair. So if Daley falls, it will be to a man with ridiculous hair. It’s a bold new direction in terrible haircuts. Daley says he has devastating “everything.”I should mention how terrible the ShowXC promotional pieces are. Like high school AV bad.
Morgan takes Daley down twice easily. This isn’t good for Paul. Ref stands them up ridiculously quick and Daley makes his second chance count and kills Morgan with knees and two sharp elbows from a thai clinch. “Eviscerating elbow” Ranallo said. Semtex in just over 2 minutes. “No one can fuck with me standing up,” Daley says.
Ebanez trains with BJ Penn, but loves to bang. So does Alvarez, although he’s a great wrestler too. Ebanez has the advantage on the ground, but Alvarez has the wrestling to keep it standing.
All that said, Alvarez immediately scores the takedown. Good thing I typed all that out. They call him an “All American” wrestler. High school, so he’s no Koscheck. They stand and Alvarez controls the stand up as well. Ebenez has had alot of success in ROTR in Hawaii, but Alvarez is dominating the first round. Alvarez has kept an amazing pace in the first round. Borderline 10-8 round for Alvarez. He was killing Ebenez, but Ross is like a mini-Cabbage.
The fight slows down significantly in the second. Quadros calls an Alvarez high kick seconds before it comes. That’s why he’s the Fight Professor. Alvarez goes for a leg trip and just clocks Ebenez when he tries to get up. Wicked right hand puts him out.
